The Jewish Ḥāfeẓ: Classical New Persian Literature in the Judeo-Persian Garšūni Literary Tradition

Abstract The immensity of the corpus and diversity genres Classical New Persian in Judeo-Persian garb is remarkable, comprising a wide-ranging multitude from translations Tanakh rabbinic works to chronicles, lexicographies, religious poetry, medieval Hebrew poems, large non-Jewish literature transcribed script. Yet, literary corpora remain incompletely catalogued as well unsatisfactorily studied. While detailed studies literature-in-transcription, comparisons with common Perso-Arabic script, are still desiderata, this article aims undertake preliminary survey extant versions Dīvān Šams od-Dīn Moḥammad Ḥāfeẓ Shiraz (d. 792/1390) address some contextual aspects its popularity among Iranian Jewry.
